How Far Can I Drive on an Empty Tank of Gas?
If you’ve been driving your car for a while, you likely know the terrible feeling when you realize you’re almost completely out of gas without a gas station in sight. While the warning light, usually a picture of a fuel pump or simply the letter “E”, can be useful in letting you know when you’re about to run out, it’s never a welcome sight.
Some drivers make a habit out of going as far as they can with a nearly empty tank, while others start to worry whenever their gas is below half a tank. No matter how careful of a driver you are, it’s incredibly useful to know the limits of your vehicle, and know just how far you can go if you find yourself on unfamiliar roads on an empty tank without a gas station in sight.
What Happens When Your Tank is Empty
Vehicles will tell you that your fuel tank is empty before it really is. Even if the gas gauge says it’s completely empty, there is going to be little left in your tank. The fuel light let’s drivers know when the car has registered that it’s nearly empty, but there’s still some fuel left in the tank. Older models of cars and cars built for driving long distances, usually work or service vehicles, often will have a reserve tank, keeping a bit of gas in case you run low or completely out of main fuel reserve. Newer models of cars aren’t manufactured with a reserve tank, yet they keep essentially the same idea by telling you your tank is empty before it is.
Can You Drive on an Empty Tank?
Yes and no. If you’re driving on an empty road and the fuel light comes on and tells you your tank is empty, there is about 30-50 miles worth of fuel left in the tank. This should be enough to get you to the nearest gas station safely. But it’s best not to make a habit out of driving on an empty tank, as it can lead to a situation where you’re stranded on the side of the road, and cause significant damage to your vehicle.
